John Gosling

Picture
John Gosling was born and raised in London and received his training as an architect there at the Architectural Association School of Architecture.

He immigrated to America in the 1960s, and for many years had a professional career as an architect-urban planner specializing in urban revitalization in major cities and towns across the country and abroad.  As part of his architectural training, John studied art at the Central Saint Martin’s School of Art (now the University of the Arts, London) where he got into the habit of sketching and carrying a sketch book to his assignments. There John studied figure drawing, portraiture, perspective and media experimentation.  It helped him as an architect, and he still returns over the past several years to the UAL for refresher courses.

Since moving to Alexandria in 1996, John has taken figure drawing and silk screen classes at the Art League School and printmaking at the Discover Graphics Atelier under Penny Barringer at the Torpedo Factory. He joined Printmakers Inc. in 2014.

Artist Statement

I work mostly with woodcuts and linocut relief prints, some etchings, and pen and ink drawings.  For me, my work is about the composition, the subject matter, and not so much about the process.  I do like the handmade quality of relief printing and find this medium is now my preferred means of artistic expression. I am attracted to the chiaroscuro, light-dark, effect that print graphics—especially linocuts and woodcuts—can produce. I like high contrast, flood lighting, shadow boxes, finding that—in one sense—relief prints are like typeface, where the form, more than color or shading, becomes the essential tools for visual communication. I see them as distillations, almost abstractions, where extraneous elements are withheld or downplayed, and a more immediate connection can be made with the viewer. Less is more—not always true of course, but sometimes minimum means generate maximum effect like bold headlines on the front pages of a newspaper.  It is this minimalist aspect of relief printing that I find empowering.

Most of my work has the human connection employing figure drawing and portraiture, and architecture, townscapes, and landscapes.
